America's HealthShare Review: Programs, Costs and Guidelines

Independent America's HealthShare review: RED, WHITE, BLUE and COMPANION programs, published starting prices, pre-existing rules, limits and who it fits.

By Health Sharing Compass Editorial Team · Published · 5 min read

America's HealthShare is a health care sharing program of Melita Sharing Ministry, Inc. It offers three main programs for people under 65 (RED, WHITE and BLUE) plus COMPANION for people 65 and older on Medicare. We built this review from the organization's own programs page (opens in new tab) and sharing guidelines (opens in new tab), as published when we checked. Always read the current versions before you apply.

The short version

Possible fit: healthy individuals and families who share the ministry's values, want freedom to choose providers, and are interested in integrative, naturopathic or regenerative care that many insurance plans don't include.

Probably not a fit: anyone with an active or recent condition who needs bills shared in the first year, or anyone who needs guaranteed payment.

Programs at a glance

ProgramPublished starting priceWho it's forAnnual Unshared Amount options
RED$100/moMost comprehensive program$3,000, $6,000, $9,000 or $12,000
WHITE$89/moSingle members aged 18–29$3,000 or $12,000
BLUE$71/moCatastrophic needs only, high AUANot listed on the programs page
COMPANION$98/mo65+ on Medicare Parts A & B, single only$500

Prices are "starting at" figures; costs vary by age and chosen membership and don't include a $15 account fee that may apply depending on payment type (programs (opens in new tab)). For RED, WHITE and BLUE, the guidelines say eligible expenses are shared up to $1 million per incident per year (guidelines (opens in new tab)).

What stands out

  • Integrative and advanced care. RED lists integrative and naturopathic care, regenerative medicine and peptides, precision oncology, nutritional counseling and long-term prescription sharing (programs (opens in new tab)).
  • No network restrictions. You choose your provider; if a provider doesn't work with health shares, you request a self-pay discount, pay and submit the itemized bill (how it works (opens in new tab)).
  • Care coordination. The organization describes complimentary care coordination and navigation for surgeries, cancer care, maternity care and hospital stays (why choose (opens in new tab)).
  • Wellness exam. The guidelines list one wellness exam or physical per program year as eligible for sharing before the Annual Unshared Amount, including screening labs. Program-specific sections can modify this, so check the section for your program (guidelines (opens in new tab)).

Limits and rules to read carefully

From the sharing guidelines (opens in new tab):

  • First 60 days: sharing is limited to accidents, emergencies and acute illness.
  • Pre-existing conditions: not eligible in year one; up to $25,000 in months 13–24; an additional $25,000 may be eligible in months 25–36; no longer pre-existing from month 37. Cancers have a 60-month look-back. The ministry may decline applicants with active medical needs. Details in our pre-existing conditions guide.
  • Submission deadline: sharing requests are due within 120 days of service, with up to one year allowed if earlier submission wasn't reasonably possible.
  • Pre-notification: surgeries, inpatient stays, MRIs/PET scans, pregnancy and several other services need advance notice. See how to check whether a bill will be shared.
  • Hospital notice: emergency and maternity admissions must be reported within 48 hours or the next business day.
  • Statement of beliefs and lifestyle: members must affirm the ministry's shared beliefs, which are rooted in Christian teaching, and lifestyle standards, including abstaining from illegal drugs.
  • Exclusions: the guidelines list exclusions, including care related to abortion, IVF and surrogacy (complications of pregnancy may still be eligible), hazardous hobbies and most cosmetic treatment.
  • Contributions can change: the suggested monthly amount is set by the Board and reviewed monthly; it is not actuarially based.
  • Cancellation: written notice by the 1st of the prior month; no refund if you withdraw more than 30 days after your start date.

Our take

America's HealthShare is a credible option for healthy members who share its values and want a wide range of conventional and integrative care options at a lower monthly price. Read the full guidelines, compare it with Christian Healthcare Ministries and CrowdHealth, and make sure you could handle a bill that isn't shared.
